Whaling

This composition depicts the traditional gear used by Makah whale hunters along the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. Canoes and paddles provided access to the hunting grounds and transportation on the water; whales were harpooned and then buoyed to the surface with inflated sealskin floats.

The background expresses the continuous cycle of clouds and water—rain falling from the sky, feeding the rivers and streams, and ultimately returning to the sea—so essential to the traditional cultures of our coast. And, of course, there are the whales.
