Whaling
This painting shows whales and canoes mixed with a geometric form inspired by Ozette art. The canoes are the traditional "Nootkan" type used by the Nuu-chah-nulth of Vancouver Island, the Makahs, and coast tribes south to the Columbia River. These ocean-going canoes were intimately associated with whaling by the Makahs and Nuu-chah-nulth peoples.
