Chasing Serpents
An open-work whorl featuring two head-to-tail lightning serpents seemingly chasing each other. I imagine this is how lightning serpents play while waiting for Thunderbird to call on them to go whaling. While perfectly functional, I like feeling of motion and lightness of this whorl.
The nucleated circles on the bodies of the serpents are largely a historic innovation in southern Northwest Coast art that depended on acquiring metal nails that could be fashioned into small compasses.
