Cape Alava

Cape Alava is the westernmost point of the contiguous United States and the site of the ancient Makah whaling and sealing village of Ozette.

This composition looks north from the Cape, with Cannonball Island visible opposite the ancient village site. The whales passing offshore are an essential part of the scene, recalling the annual migrations that brought them along this coast and sustained the Makah people for generations.
